Research interests

My research is in the field of nanomagnetism and spintronics. In the Condensed Matter group we deposit ultrathin layers of magnetic materials such as iron, cobalt and nickel and use nanofabrication techniques to pattern them into nanostructures. We are interested both in the fundamental physics of magnetic nanostructures and in how they may be applied in new electronic devices which exploit the spin of the electron. My particular interests are in thin magnetic films with perpendicularly oriented magnetization, domain wall dynamics in magnetic nanowires, and hybrid piezoelectric/magnetic structures. I use magnetic imaging techniques such as magneto-optic Kerr effect microscopy, and photoemission electron microscopy at the Diamond Light Source.
