Postgraduate research degrees

The School of Physics and Astronomy is one of the leading centres for research in the UK. There are five main research groups;

  • Astrophysics
  • Condensed Matter
  • Molecular and Nanoscale Physics
  • Soft Matter
  • Theoretical Physics

We have a strong interdisciplinary ethos involving other departments and schools within the University of Leeds and elsewhere, as well as industrial and commercial establishments.

We welcome PhD applications from students with backgrounds in the relevant sciences and mathematics, including physics, mathematics, engineering, chemistry, and even computer science and some biosciences if you have the right background.
