PhD Funding

There are a range of Scholarships/Studentships on offer to fund Postgraduate Research Degrees.

Applicants who have previously studied at the University of Leeds will also be eligible for the Alumni Bursary, if self funding their research degree.

Leeds Doctoral Scholarships

The School is please to offer a number of scholarships for 2017 entry, as part of the University's Doctoral Scholarships scheme, which is open to all applicants. The scheme covers academic fees for up to three years, along with a maintenance grant matching the Research Council UK rate (£14,296 for 2016/17).

These scholarships can be used in conjunction with any of the project opportunities within the School's research groups.

Eligibility 

To be eligible you must:

›  have achieved at least a First Class (1) Honours degree or equivalent at
   undergraduate level

›  meet the English language requirements of your programme of study if English is    not your first language

›  not have already been awarded or currently be studying for a doctoral degree

›  not already be in receipt of a doctoral scholarship

›  have submitted a research degree application form and be in receipt of a student
   ID number

International students

The Bragg Excellence Scholarship
The Lonsdale Excellence Scholarship
The Stoner Excellence Scholarship

These scholarships are worth a minimum of £5,000 each per year of study, for a maximum of three years, as a part fee waiver and are open to applicants paying at the full International fee rate. For exceptional candidates the value of the award may be increased to match the difference between the prevailing International and UK/EU fee rate.

The award will be made for one year in the first instance, renewable for a further period of up to two years subject to satisfactory academic progress.

Applicants should have the minimum of a 1st class Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Physics or Physics related subject.

These awards are available on a competitive basis to International applicants who have been accepted for admission onto a research degree programme in the School of Physics and Astronomy. They are not open to individuals who are already holding another award from the University of Leeds which covers the payment of tuition fees in full or part, except for the Alumni Bursary.

Applicants will automatically be considered for all three awards.

Applications should be received no later than 31 January and candidates will be informed of the outcome by the end of February.

Awards must be taken up by the end of the calendar year in which the award was made.

China Scholarship

Around 15 China Scholarship Council - University of Leeds Scholarships will be available for high-quality students who are citizens or permanent residents of the People's Republic of China.

The School of Physics and Astronomy also offers a number of PhD studentships funded through Research Councils, Charities, Industry and the University, however applicants are advised to apply for a scholarship in the first instance.
