A physics student carrying out an experiment in a dark room

The School of Physics and Astronomy is one of the leading centres for research in the UK. We welcome PhD applications from students with backgrounds in the relevant sciences and mathematics, including physics, mathematics, engineering, and even computer science, chemistry, and some biosciences if you have the right background. Please contact us for more information.

The School has five main research groups, most of which are interdisciplinary and work with other departments and schools within the University of Leeds and elsewhere.

PRIORITY PROJECTS FOR 2010:

There are a variety of scholarships available, for both EU and International students.

We are currently accepting applications for our new MSc in Quantum Technologies. More information is available here, including application information.

If you would like to apply for a PhD position here, please first have a look at the different research areas. We advise you to:

  • Decide whether you prefer theory, experiment, simulation or observation
  • Decide which research areas or groups interest you.
  • Contact potential supervisors in these areas that interest you.

When applying, state your choice of areas of research in order of preference. You are also welcome to indicate specific research projects that particularly interest you. The University's post-graduate application process is described here, and you can apply online directly here.
