Advice for Staff Supporting Students with Disabilities

Most UK disabled students can access Disabled Students Allowances, which are funds used to pay for additional support. This support is not imposed on students, but some can't be accessed without this funding. Another important point is that as part of the application process students undertake a formal Needs Assessment, which is critical in helping them and University staff to understand how the student's disability affects their study. This is very much a co-operative process.

The sort of support available includes equipment such as computers and specialist assistive software, assistance from people such as specialist one to one academic strategy development and other additional expenses such as travel and photocopying/printing. The focus is on development of skills and independence.
